A1 Telecom offers FTTC broadband in Austria

In Austria, in the town of Obertun-am-See, the telecom operator A1 Telekom has deployed FTTC technology by laying 17 kilometers of fiber optic cables. These fiber optic cables connect 1400 houses in the town. A1 Telekom is the leading telecom operator in Austria. Telekom Austria and Mobilkom Austria merged in 2010 to form A1 Telekom. A1 provides Gigaspeed 30 or Gigaspeed 16 through the FTTC technology. In FTTC technology, the optical fiber goes to the curb from the central office. Copper cables will be distributed to the houses from the curb to provide high speed broadband. In this case, the last mile is not optical fiber as in the case of FTTH.

Climax Telephone offers Fiber to the premise broadband

Climax Telephone, utilizing the federal stimulus funds of about US$ 2 million, will build fiber optic networks to offer high speed broadband services to 1000 peopole in Climax, Scottes and near villages. The technology will be based on Fiber to the premise to deliver the high speed broadband services. Fiber to the premise will be coming from the central office of CTS Telecom located in Climax.

Hyperoptic offers 1Gbps through Fiber to the curb

In another development, UK internet service provider Hyperoptic said they will be soon launching the 1Gbps fiber optic broadband services in UK. Hyperoptic’s 1Gbps services will be based on Fiber to the premise technology. Hyperoptic targets residential and businesses who wants to have high speed broadband services. Currently Virgin Media offers 100 Mbps broadband services in UK utilizing FTTC technology.

34 percent of the households will have fiber connection by 2015

The number of worldwide FTTx subscribers will reach to 227 million with in the next four more years. Currently there are approximately 61 million subscribers .The figure is updated as of December 2010. The year 2010 showed an increase of 53% in the number of FTTx subscribers. IDATE, a Europe based market research organization estimates that fiber access will be availabe to around 493 million homes by the end of the year 2015.

We estimate that with a population of 7200 million by the year 2015, the percentage of house holds having fiber optic broadband will be 34%. This is a promising figure. More than half of the houses with FTTx connection will be in Asia. Naturally, this should be as China and India together will have 2400 million population by 2015.

FTTx migration reaches to 48% of CHT’s broadband subscribers

CHT – Chunghwa Telecom’s broadband subscribers are switching over to FTTx at a faster pace. Currently more than 48% of CHT’s subscribers in Taiwan are connected to FTTx broadband. CHT estimates that by the year 2015, Taiwan will have 80% FTTx subscribers.

There are more than 4.4 million broadband subscribers in Taiwan as of 31st March 2011. FTTx subscribers amounts to approximately 2.1 million. CHT says its FTTx revenue reached around 63% of total broadband access revenue.

Fiber to the cabinet based high speed broadband service offer from Powernet

UK based internet service provider Powernet announced that they will start offering high speed broadband services to the subscribers through Fiber to the cabinet technology. As per the plans the download speed will be 40Mbps and the upload speed will be 10Mbps.

The cost of the FTTC based broadband will be below 50 British pounds that will allow users to have unlimited access. Small internet service providers like Powernet can reap from the growing demand for high speed broadband by offering FTTC based internet connections.

Zen Internet provides Fiber to the premise high speed broadband services in UK

Zen Internet annouced their plan to provide high speed broadband services in Bradwell Abbey in Milton Keyness and Highmans Park in North London. This will be Zen’s first FTTP based internet service.

British Telecom had selected Zen to conduct trials of FTTP services. Zen is already in the FTTC services and their FTTC will reach 600 exchanges by 2011 December. Fiber to the premise technology provides faster internet experience to the subscribers both residential and business.
